Hi Victoria, I highly suggest you take 50 mg of zinc per day, preferably with food. Take this amount for 1 month and then drop to 25mg for as long as you are on birth control. Also stay away from foods which elevate yeast like pastries, high sugar snacks or drinks as well as potatoes (chips, fries...etc), raisins, rye bread, barley and walnuts. Also, if and when you start Kariva take 50 mg of vitamin B-6 because Kariva will deplete your B-6.

Hi, I was on OrthoTri Cyclen for 7 years and continually got yeast infections every few months. I was off birth control for one year and had not one infection and no other problems! I recently got back on the OrthoTri Cyclen LO and already have a yeast infection. I also have been on my period for 25 days. My doctor wants to put me on Kariva the next cycle but doesnt know why birth control gives me yeast infections! What do you think and what are your recommendations? help!

Jennifer, yes the client with the chronic yeast infection did stop taking the birth control. The plan is for her to completely catch up with her nutrients B6 and zinc and then if she returns to the pill she needs to take a maintenance amount of both these nutrients so as not to return to the same problem. She is also on a multi-vitamin in addition to the B6 and zinc. In addition to these supplements she needed to stop eating anything high in yeast like bread, lower her sugar intake (yeast proliferates with sugar) and temporarily stay away from all potato products (chips, French fries…etc), walnuts, cherries and raisins because they increase yeast. I am happy to report she is about 90% clear of all her yeast issues. It took about 7 weeks to get to this point.

I highly suggest you try the same regimen. Start with 150 mg of B6 and 100 mg of zinc per day. Divide up the dosages through-out the day. For example if the B6 tablets are 50 mg each, take 2 in the morning and 1 in the evening with food. Do the same for the zinc. Purchase a high quality brand. FYI, the brand I suggest, Nature’s Sunshine (which is shipped to you), has a B-6, 50mg. supplement (120 tablets) for $9.75. The zinc (herb based) 25mg (150 tablets) is $9.00. The multi-vitamin (Super Supplemental w/out iron herb based 120 tablets) is $17.15 (stay away from Centrum, One-a-day...etc.). These are very high quality absorbent products. Compare to what the cost of a high quality product at Vitamin Shoppe or Whole Foods Market would be (call them).

Once you do your research contact me if you decide to order the Nature’s Sunshine (UPS - $6.00 - $7.50 shipping fee). Or you can call them direct 1-800-453-1422 with my account number 576437-6 and tell them you want to drop-ship.

Stay at the B6- 150 mg and Zinc 100 mg for 2 weeks then lower each by 50mg for another 2 weeks. Finally take 50mg of B6 and 25mg of Zinc as maintenance amount if you decide to continue with the Kariva. Watch your intake of potato and other suggested foods to avoid. Let me know how you are doing in 6 weeks.

KARIVA SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects of Kariva may include abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, acne, fluid retention, bloating, blood clots, chest pain, hair loss, headache, heart attack, high blood pressure, kidney problem, migraine, leg pain, nausea, sex drive changes, skin discoloration, stroke, vomiting, and weight gain or loss.

"The deficient B6 and zinc combination has caused a chronic yeast infection which has lasted over 3 months. She has stopped the pill but now needs to work on undoing its ill affects"

Hi, my name is Jennifer. I'm currently taking Kariva and have being experiencing recurring yeast infection. I saw on your article that there was a girl dealing with the same issue. Did she stop the pill? What about if everything else about this pill is good? Should I take a multivitamin and would that help? Also, if I stop the pill what should I do to undo the its effects?

I've being to three different doctors and they just don't give a good answer.

Please help me!
